November - Family Violence Month
Wetaskiwin Family Violence Unit - Family Violence Prevention Month
The month of November is dedicated to educating Albertans on the dangers of Family Violence. Encouraging those to take action and help end the cycle of violence, the Wetaskiwin RCMP would like to advise the public that family violence is real and found in many of our homes.
Whether it is physical or psychological abuse, “Family violence transcends socio-economic status, education and culture”. Averaging approximately 45 family violence related calls a month, the Wetaskiwin RCMP established a Family Violence Unit in September 2008 as part of their commitment with the Province of Alberta to establish safe and healthy communities.
Working together to offer the best service and support for the Wetaskiwin area, the Family Violence Unit consists of representatives from the RCMP, Victim Services and Children and Youth Services. A collaborative effort to share resources and information, the Family Violence Unit has demonstrated local success in identifying victim needs and support for children and families at risk. Actively liaising with the various government agencies, the Family Violence Unit offers information on Family counseling Rehabilitation Programs and various law Enforcement options.
“Receiving 46 calls for service in October for domestic and family violence related offences – 12 resulted in Criminal Charges and 3 are still under investigation.’
Believing it is everyone’s responsibility to report ALL Domestic and Family Violence occurrences, the Wetaskiwin RCMP encourages the public to contact their respective police agencies or the Wetaskiwin Family Violence Unit at 780-312-7200.
